Peace Pilgrim
In my lifetime I
make it a practice to genuinely study the lives and teaching of persons who have
demonstrated by their life that they believed their own teaching. Jesus Christ,
Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Schweitzer, and Peace Pilgrim by their lives devoted to their
beliefs have impacted millions
for the good. Each of these persons spoke truth as they had tasted it
experientially. They would
never speak mere conjecture.
Sadly, few people
have heard of Peace Pilgrim. Simply put, this was a person who for an entire adult
lifetime lived without possessing anything except the clothes on her back. She had
no money, never asked for any, and would not accept it. She walked over 25,000 miles
on foot simply meeting people along the way and sharing a message of peace. She totally
relied upon God to provide her with food and shelter and she was never disappointed.
After a few years she ended up speaking at universities,
churches, town halls, etc. by request. If she received any money, she simply passed it on
to others.
Fortunately her
friends saved recordings of some of her lectures, and even compiled a book
which is essentially her life using her own words. They have this material online
for download
at no charge on the website Peace Pilgrim . Much of the material is in PDF format
which you may
download onto your computer and read at your leisure. Additionally, the book about
her life
told in own words is available in book form from Amazon and elsewhere.
The spiritual
insights which illuminated her life are astounding and most advanced. Below are
just a few from scores of notable quotes from her life:
I never believed there was
any time under any circumstances when it was right for me to hurt anybody.
Peace Pilgrim
If only you could see the whole picture, if you knew the whole story, you would realize that no problem ever comes to you that does not have a purpose in your life, that cannot contribute to your inner growth. When you perceive this, you will recognize that problems are opportunities in disguise.
As I lived according to the highest light I had, I discovered that other light was given; that I opened myself to receiving more light as I lived the light I had.
There are those who know and do not do. This is very sad. In this materialistic age we have such a false criterion by which to measure success. We measure it in terms of dollars, in terms of material things. But happiness and inner peace do not lie in that direction. If you know but do not do, you are a very unhappy person indeed.
I began to realize that I was disobeying my rule of life which says: I will not ask anyone to do for me things that I would refuse to do for myself. Now, I wouldn't kill any creature--I wouldn't even kill a chicken or a fish--and therefore I stopped immediately eating all flesh.
If you`re harboring the slightest bitterness toward anyone, or any unkind thoughts of any sort whatever, you must get rid of them quickly. They are not hurting anyone but you. It isn't enough just to do right things and say right things--you must also think right things before your life can come into harmony.
You must learn to forgive
yourself as easily as you forgive others. And then take a further step and use all that
energy that you used in condemning yourself for improving yourself. After that I
really started to get somewhere--because there's only one person you can change and
that's yourself. After you have changed yourself, you might be able to inspire others to
look for change.
Reading all of her thoughts has
helped me gain closure in several spiritual areas of my life and I
highly recommend examining this source of wisdom. Just go to Peace Pilgrim
